New stuff arriving…

I finished my Previews orders for October comics early in the week and I’ve posted the highlights here. Of note: Evelyn Evelyn by Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer, the hardcover collection of Geoff Johns’ Superman Secret Origin series (great read!), Fables issue #100, a new Richard Stark adaption by Darwyn Cook, Marvel’s Carnage by CLAYTON CRAIN (he of the spidey/iron man image above) and the beginning of a new Charles Burns (Black Hole) opus! A few of the September highlights have already arrived, Kirkman’s Guardians of the Globe and Science Dog #1 snuck in last weekend. Wolverine #1, Amulet vol 03, Atomic Robo vol 04 and Invincible volume 13 all arrive this weekend. To remind yourself what else September has in store – check out the highlights here. No sooner do I finish one Previews but another arrives (funny that..) November promises two new Batman series and the return of Battle Chasers!

We have a copy of the McSweeney’s Comic Section from the San Francisco Panorama broadsheet tabloid on shelf now - Featuring contributions from Erik Larsen, Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, Seth, Jessica Abel, Adrian Tomine, Kim Deitch, Ivan Brunetti, Gene Yang, Alison Bechdel, Jon Adams, Keith Knight and many more. In addition to all the comics, it comes with a Chris Ware poster titled “Rocket Sam,” which features a build-it-yourself paper spacecraft, and accompanying scenery and characters. A discerning choice that may be but not the only choice! I recently restocked the Comics Greatest Hits stand – $2.00 first issues featuring Sin City, Witchblade, Aliens Vs Predator, X-men, Hellboy, Fables, Locke & Key and lots more…This weekend’s shipment will feature more $2.00 first issues (Conan & the Goon!) along with the Blackest Night Series 5 Action Figures (pictured), a Danger Girl Hardcover, a Best of OZ & NZ comics anthology, and the first of the X-Men Curse of the Mutants miniseries – Shipment hits the shelf 28th August 2010 – full cover gallery is here. Last weekend’s shipment showed up a little late – so we still have copies of the Buffy one shot Riley and those most excellent Udon Streetfighter and Capcom art books. I love a good first issue & Mike Mignola’s Baltimore: The Plague Ships #1 is certainly all that and then some.. There’s something to be said for waiting for a nice bookshelf ready trade paperback (or better yet a deluxe hardcover treasury edition!) and devouring the tale in one sitting but I’m glad we still have the periodical option available. Reading a perfectly pitched first issue (and rereading it, looking for any missed nuances) is a great comic book joy. The anticipation of the 2nd issue (mixed with imagined extrapolation of where the writer will take the story) isn’t a chore – not when there’s a library/shop/web full of other tales to bide my time. In fact I find myself rereading recent single issue comics more so than I would reread the more convenient trade paperback collections adorning my bookshelves at home.

I’ve been spoiled for choice the last few weeks – lots of great debut issues: Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark #1 (yep!), S.H.I.E.L.D #1, Scarlet #1, Nemesis #1, Sixth Gun #1 - all leap to mind. So spend some time checking the previews of the cover gallery on the site – lots of hidden gems to uncover – and check out Mark One’s Comics Greatest Hits stand next time you are in Mk1. $2.00 reprints of some of comics greatest debut issues are hard to beat!

I’m knee deep in spending the August budget (such as it is..) so I’ll make this a quicky… This weekend’s delivery has a few interesting non comics – not the least of which is the above T-shirts (sizes Med – XLarge). Doctor Who fans will want to check out the 11th Doctor action figures – first wave should be on the orange toy wall Saturday… The book walls have received lots of restock attention this week so make you sure you browse the arrivals highlighted below or the actual shelves themselves. Buffy fans should look for the first omnibus collecting some of the very early tie in novels – details here. Mass Effect and Halo novels are sitting unprocessed on the counter as I type this – I should have these on shelf by the weekend and announced more formally on the site as well.

September Preorder Highlights!

Ratchet and Clank has been the surprise early leader in preorders placed since the September schedule was uploaded to the site this week. Lots of other great titles on the list like the new Serenity Hardcover “Shepherd’s Tale”; How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less looks to be an interesting nonfiction read; Sean Phillips & Ed Brubaker’s return to the Incognito world has been keenly awaited (I’ve mentioned how good the first book was right?). Mk1 keeps our top 1000 graphic novel’s instock and up for grabs on both the website (here) and our shop shelves. Having a top 1000 graphic novel list is only a point of historical interest (and a limited one at that!) if I don’t keep it up to date. I review recent arrivals (no quick job when you consider how many new titles arrive each week!) regularly and always meant to post my findings to the site. So…

Image comic’s Chew series gradated recently to the “keep it instock” status Check it out in the Mk1 online catalogue here – http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/chew-volume-02-international-flavor.html - it’s got a pretty bizarre set up: Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why.

Another title showing a similar potential is A SECOND CHANCE AT SARAH – cool little synopsis and a great compact read (not a multi volume epic!) It’s a supernatural adventure involving love, loss, time travel and deals done with the devil! Manga titles Fruits Basket and Hellsing have always sat just outside Mk1’s top manga seller status (perenials Naruto, Deathnote and the Dragonball Z volumes keeping them out!) however good recent sales have lifted them into consideration. Now that Fruits Basket’s three in one Hardcovers are easier to source I expect I’ll be adding these to the main catalogue next month! Speaking of Manga -check out Clamp’s Okimono Kimono sourcebook – this title doesn’t stay on shelf for long – more back soon. OKKO may well join Archaia publishing’s other Mk1 hit Mouse Guard judging by the great reviews from Mk1 readers. Final candidate (this month at least) is Del Rey’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES graphic novel adaption – I haven’t seen copies last a full week on Mk1’s new release shelf yet. I’ve sourced some more of the Del Rey Free Comic Book Day sampler – so if you want to check this one out ask me to add a free copy to your next order.

Right just time to highlight one title that should be doing far better on the sales charts: Bayou by Jeremy Love published by DC’s Zuda. Beautiful book – a very eeirie, spooky tale. Happy Independence Day to the US – and to NZ a late comic delivery!

This weekend’s comics will slip to Monday – meaning we will be unloading another 500 new old comics to the back issue bins in their place. A shame really because this new delivery is a checklist of virtually all the great July releases: The Blackest Night Hardcovers, Absolute Planetary, Bendis’ new creator owned comic Scarlet, a brand new Star Wars Legacy collection, Star Wars Old Republic #1, X-Men #1, Marve’s latest Daredevil epic Shadowland – and lots more besides (for instance the latest House of Mystery volume, a $1.00 Smurfs comic!) seriously check it out – the full cover gallery is here. The only thing missing is the latest/last Scott Pilgrim – and that can’t be far away!

So that’s Monday… Who needs more reasons other than the uncovered older comic treasures to visit us this weekend? Last weekend’s comic delivery was late (this shipment turned up on the Monday rather than the always hoped for Saturday appearance). It marked the first delayed shipment since the Mk1 back office was taken over by boxes and boxes (and boxes and boxes) of back issue comics. So instead of new comics we unpacked new old comics! From now on every delayed delivery weekend (when it comes to international freight anything can muck the schedule up between LA and Hamilton via Tahiti!) we will be sorting, grading pricing and putting to shelf these back issue comics. One thing we won’t be doing though is cataloging them. Why not? Well there’s no point. The back issues will be priced to move in bulk ($7.00 each, 2 for $12.00 or 5 for $24.00). A catalogue is only as good as the people keeping the info up to date – and to be perfectly honest the thought of inventory controlling thousands of older non-barcoded comics is more than a little daunting. I have no plans to sell the bulk of these issues online – so cataloging would really be an academic exercise at best.

Why not online? Simple economics. My definition of retailer frustration is selling a $7.00 comic and than spending $30.00 worth of staff hours finding the comic because somebody has misfiled the issue. By all means send me your want lists and I (or someone much like me) will check the processed back issues for your request (note the very carefully chosen words there)…alas the combo price break won’t be on offer for want list hunting (for the aforementioned expensive staff hours reason and because we will no doubt spend an inordinate amount of time back and forwards with – have you got this, and if not that have you got this – emails). On a related note Specific Want Lists are good (Nick Fury Agent of Shield #1, 3 & #22). General want lists are bad (awesome comics with cool covers from the 1960s). No doubt there are some reading this that think “he just wants us to visit the shop” and you would be right – I view this new back issue section as one more feather in the Mark One cap. We get lots of feedback about how good the Mk1 shop is from international and NZ wide visitors – so I’m certainly not ashamed in asking everybody to pay a visit or take a detour off state highway one if you are in the vicinity. I will be listing the cream of the crop direct to trademe – along with any significant consecutive runs – so keeping an eye on our listings would be a good idea for those further afield.

The new back issue section is the back wall of the shop – eventually it will take over the old curtained off changing room courtesy of filing boxes organised via title. I’m not looking to purchase any more back issue collections (it took the whole weekend to deal with the first 500 odd – I’m pretty sure we will still be sorting these comics out this time next year!) But a good response and who knows? A successful first month might generate new staff hours for the second month! And a good second month might give me a budget to go buying! Watch this space…
