The Mk1 web site might be all about the comics – but our Victoria Street shop stocks a lot more besides! Here’s a report of this week’s arrivals (covering 3rd June - 14th June 2012).
Lots of Not-Comics to report this week. Along with a big restock of Mk1 wares we have three new release board games (check out @jackatacounter’s bite size reviews below) and a major expansion of Mk1′s new Army Painter range – featuring new coloured spray cans. We welcome the Order of the Stick books back in fresh new crowd funded printings, a good restock of D&D and a few Pathfinder RPG returns. Our Warmachine & Hordes shelves are chocka – of note is the new Hordes Battleboxes and the new No Quarter magazine. Look for the Flames of War Know your Forces book (plus restock and the late shipping May copy of Wargames Illustrated). A couple of new Pokemon/Yugioh offerings (Gold series 4!) – the full arrivals list can be found below.
Don’t forget to check out on our Facebook and Google Plus pages for the Mk1 Swagger report - my weekly photo stroll round the shop – aimed at tempting you to visit the shop this weekend (open till 6pm Friday evening, 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sunday). Looking ahead to next week – the big release will be the new Black Library offerings: Space Marine Battles book Wrath of Iron, William King’s 40K hardcover ANGEL OF FIRE, Warhammer novel VALKIA THE BLOODY – oh and a fresh new White Dwarf magazine as well.
Asara RIOA38 $99.90
No endless stream of golden praises on this one. It doesn’t need it. Asara is a very attractive game of players competing to one-up each other building amazing towers. It is NOT full of never before mechanics. It is NOT a frantic experience from start to finish.
So why do I recommend it?
Because it is one of those games that wins you over by being really very good at what it does and being comfortable to play.
Once you’ve played a few games of Asara you’ll understand it… you’ll have that take away experience where you happily mull over what you did, and what you could have done, and you’ll consider how just how you win the next game.
This game is not the “next big thing,” but it could be the faithful dog your always happy to see… and that kind of consistency has its own value that lasts and lasts. If you want a game that feels familiar, solid and friendly, where you can smile win, loose or draw and still be keen for another round, this is that game. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/72991/asara
This one falls under the catagory of moments to learn, but with enough variation to keep you playing for years and years!
A brilliant little fighting game where players take on the roll of fighters and lunge at each other, blocking and punching and forcing their opponent back.
That alone would be enough to grab this game, but inside this treasure trove of a game box lies SO many options and variants that you could probably choose a different option every time and never play 2 games with the exact same rules in play.
Perhaps you’d like to play with special characters? Maybe draft your own abilities? What about a fight of many vs a dragon? What about a traitor variant? This game is brilliant, each version tweaks what you know with out forcing you to learn endless new rules and it plays fast and cleverly.
