I love a good first issue & Mike Mignola’s Baltimore: The Plague Ships #1 is certainly all that and then some.. There’s something to be said for waiting for a nice bookshelf ready trade paperback (or better yet a deluxe hardcover treasury edition!) and devouring the tale in one sitting but I’m glad we still have the periodical option available.  Reading a perfectly pitched first issue (and rereading it, looking for any missed nuances) is a great comic book joy.  The anticipation of the 2nd issue (mixed with imagined extrapolation of where the writer will take the story) isn’t a chore  – not when there’s a library/shop/web full of other tales to bide my time.  In fact I find myself rereading recent single issue comics more so than I would reread the more convenient trade paperback collections adorning my bookshelves at home.

I’ve been spoiled for choice the last few weeks – lots of great debut issues: Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark #1 (yep!), S.H.I.E.L.D #1, Scarlet #1, Nemesis #1, Sixth Gun #1 -  all leap to mind.  So spend some time checking the previews of the cover gallery on the site – lots of hidden gems to uncover – and check out Mark One’s Comics Greatest Hits stand next time you are in Mk1. $2.00 reprints of some of comics greatest debut issues are hard to beat!
