In our online catalogue we offer our top 1000 graphic novels. These are the books we keep extra stock of – aiming never to sell out or at least shortening the length of time these best sellers spend off shelf. So our top 1000 books on shelf and out the back – that’s a lot of books. Outside of the perennial best seller list (Scott Pilgrim, Serenity, the Batman books and Walking Dead) the main factor that shuffles the rankings around month to month is the release of a new volume (Fables Volume #15 jumping it’s series to #5, or an anticipated movie chasing extra copies off the shelf eg “Green Lantern’s Blackest Night” shuffling into 2nd place on our “overall chart”.
The fun part of my job is finding new candidates, titles without a proven pedigree that don’t get an automatic pass into the top 1000. This month I didn’t need to think too long before elevating new Image series Morning Glories to the webshop – cool premise, great buzz, growing single issue sales and lots of emails asking about it made this decision a no-brainer. In fact I’ve already sold out of the extra copies ordered in for the site! Other titles up for consideration this month are two Marvel series Runaways and Secret Warriors. These two series tick all the boxes that Morning Glories ticked – so definitely worth checking out. Girl Genius is another series from a different part of the Mk1 shop that has been ticking over nicely – adding to the success of other web based properties making the jump to paper publication (Cyanide & Happiness, XKCD, Penny Arcade, The Guild, Order of the Stick etc!) Of course you don’t have to wait for me to list them on the site we have them on the shop shelf right now…if you thought 1000 books was a lot of choice check out Mk1′s physical shop!
