Aug 2July Review!

flight 8

A trip through the sales charts highlighting notable July hits is the scope of this message  - for an actual review proper check out friend of Mk1 the Matman’s first posting to the Mk1 site http://www.mk1.co.nz/blog/the-mat-signal-immortal-iron-fist/.

All Ages

I’ll traipse through the July highlights in age related order – kicking off with the venerable Flight series:  Volume 8 is the latest and last in this successful Eisner Award winning anthology serieshttp://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/flight-volume-08.html.  It’s a true for-all-ages comic offering lots of single self contained stories from leading creative minds sourced from through out the visual arts fraternity (not just comic creators but animators, computer graphic artists etc). The preview at this year’s Free Comic Book Day certainly built the buzz for the new  Avatar the last Airbender series - http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/avatar-the-last-airbender-volume-01-lost-adventures.html another great read that will appeal to young and not so young readers alike..

Teens Plus

A new Star Wars graphic novel series has just kicked off http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/star-wars-knight-errant-volume-01-aflame.html Knight Errant is set in the “Old Republic” era soon to be propelled to the front of the Pop culture hivemind by the upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online game from Bioware.  Speaking of the hivemind – we have a new “perfect jumping on” point for Doctor Who fans http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/doctor-who-ongoing-series-2-volume-01-ripper.html It’s the collection featuring the eleventh Doctor’s first comic outings. The Green Lantern centric Blackest Night hardcovers have been up the top of the Mk1 sales charts for the last year – so the cheaper priced softcovers have been expected to do pretty well -http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/blackest-night.html (and they have!)  There’s a trio of releases keeping DC at the top of the superhero graphic novel totem pole Green Lantern Brightest Day Hardcover http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/green-lantern-brightest-day-hardcover.html, Batman: Red Hood – the Lost Days http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/batman-red-hood-the-lost-days.html and Batwoman: Elegy http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/batwoman-volume-01-elegy.html The Batwoman book in particular has won acclaim and anticipation for the new ongoing series.  Marvel’s sole Super Hero entry in this review is Deadpool: Dead Head Redemption http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/deadpool-dead-head-redemption.html The Deadpool volumes are all good sellers – featuring an over the top mix of humour, violence and a healthy spirinkling of just plain wrong!  The Jack of Fables series gets a final volume – this companion to our best selling Fables series has an emphasis on humour.

Mature Reader
Climbing to the top of the are ratings now: Metalocalypse is an animated dark comedy series – the jump to comics has come courtesy of comics own dark comedy savant Eric (the Goon) Powell. http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/dethlok-hardcover.html.  The latest volumes of the best selling series: Dark Tower http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/dark-tower-the-gunslinger-little-sisters-of-eluria-premiere-hardcover.html and Locke & Key http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/latest-arivals/locke-and-key-volume-04-keys-to-the-kingdom-hardcover.html are both worthy mentions – personally speaking each Locke and Key volume has been one of my most looked forward to reads.  At the top of the age ratings and Mk1 sales charts is the Walking Dead.. I expected the TV 2 screening of the adaption to give this series a healthy boost!  Word is certainly spreading – I’m reordering all 14 volumes constantly. The latest volume was our July best seller by a country mile! http://www.mk1.co.nz/store/walking-dead-volume-14-no-way-out.html
