Oct 7August/September New Titles Reviewed
August September 2011 Release Review.
Busy couple of months in the Mk1 world – it’s traditionally a slower time in retail but I’ve been kept pretty busy by a heap of great releases… I’ll stick to the previous format and run down the highlights in age brackets – starting with the All Ages section..
All Ages: A new Amulet volume should be celebrated – Kazu Kibuishi (of Flight anthology fame) never fails to deliver – great art, captivating story – it’s an overall Mk1 best seller and I’m sure will rank up their with the Bone series as an all time comic classic!
- AMULET VOLUME 04 LAST COUNCIL
- DISNEY TREASURY DONALD DUCK VOLUME 02
- ATOMIC ROBO VOLUME 05 DEADLY ART OF SCIENCE (another contender for the Bone throne !)
- THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ and OZ OZMA OF OZ HARDCOVER (new softcover and a new hardcover – beautiful comics!)
Notables (these titles have not made it to Mk1′s web catalogue yet but we can supply these from the physical Mk1 shop!) Bad Island by Doug Tennapel, (up their with Mr Kibuishi’s work as well – check it out!)
Teens Plus: Adapting Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series must be a daunting prospect. But with the prequel adaption up their sleeve – the creators take on the main course proper!
- ROBERT JORDAN EYE OF THE WORLD VOLUME 01 HARDCOVER
- FF BY JONATHAN HICKMAN PREMIERE HARDCOVER VOLUME 01 not the Fantastic Four for a new generation – a Future Foundation… this series is a great read!
- INVINCIBLE IRON MAN VOLUME 08 UNFIXABLE PREMIERE HARDCOVER another series captivating both long time and new readers.
- BRIGHTEST DAY HARDCOVER VOLUME 03 After Blackest Night comes the Brightest Day – Mk1 is selling lots of these books!
- DEADPOOL ALL IN THE FAMILY (aimed at the later end of the teen age range – a mix of over the top violence and very irreverent humour!)
- HALO FALL OF REACH BOOT CAMP The Halo series may be a Mature rated game but it’s Teen audience is lapping this series up!
- SUPERMAN BATMAN NIGHT AND DAY I think this one’s the final in this clash of the Super Tropes!
- NARUTO VOLUME 52 – The latest in Mk1′s best selling manga series! The 3 in 1 volumes are also selling well also!
Notables (these titles have not made it to Mk1′s web catalogue yet but we can supply these from the physical Mk1 shop!): Inu Yasha Vizbig Edition Volume 8 By Rumiko Takahashi (we keep all of this Naruto rival instock!) How To Understand Israel In 60 Days Or Less Written by SARAH GLIDDEN Great informative read – covering a complex situation from an interesting perspective - and surprisingly entertaining!
Mature Reader:
Comics have been mining Stephen King for material for quite some time – with great results (Dark Tower, American Vampire, more!) The latest kick starter read (the first softcover printing) is an adaption of his classic The Stand. Great end of Civilisation stuff!
- STAND VOLUME 01 CAPTAIN TRIPS
- SERENITY VOLUME 02 BETTER DAYS AND OTHER STORIES HARDCOVER (new hardcover in the same format as the Shepherd’s Tale format – for those who like their books to look the same!)
- INCOGNITO VOLUME 02 BAD INFLUENCES (two proven masters of the crime genre turn their hardboiled skills to a super villain in witness protection mash up!)
- WE 3 DELUXE EDITION HARDCOVER (acclaimed comic scribe Grant Morrison’s best short tail – I mean tale! )
- LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN VOLUME III CENTURY #2 1969 (Alan Moore hasn’t quite finished with the comic world yet!)
- LOVE AND ROCKETS LIBRARY : ESPERANZA Los Bros Hernandez latest Love and Rockets collections… putting the Auteur into Mature!
Notables (these titles have not made it to Mk1′s web catalogue yet but we can supply these from the physical Mk1 shop!) Two Crime stories with a New Orleans (and in one case Katrina) Twist plus a femme fatale dark dystopian future tale! Dark Rain: A New Orleans Story Written , Carbon Grey Volume 1: Sisters At War and Sweets: New Orleans Crime Story
